Trekking in Saghro mountain area

Easy 8 Days from 350 Euros per person

Saghro 800

This volcanic mountain region does not experience true winter snows like the High Atlas making it perfect for winter hiking. The Saghro is situated between the High Atlas mountains and the Sahara desert and makes a nice link to also camel trek overnight and explore the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. You'll completely traverse the Saghro Massif on foot, ending your last day on the remote Sahara side. High uplands and volcanic monoliths resemble the U.S. southwest with soaring mesas, sparse vegetated plateaus, hidden springs and canyon oasis where you can freely ramble. You'll meet and have tea with Ait Atta nomads living in this harsh and remote landscape. Jackal, fox, wolf, toads, frogs, wild sheep, gazelle, vulture, Buzzard and the rare Bonelli-eagle survive here. Trees include date palms, acacia, tamarisk and oleander.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Meeting at the group hotel in Marrakech. Complimentary airport transfers are provided for clients arriving on this day. Depending on your arrival time you may have time to explore the old souk and streets of Marrakech.

Day 2:

After an early breakfast we drive across the Western High Atlas through traditional Berber villages towards the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass (2260m), the highest road pass in Morocco. The afternoon sees us reaching Ouarzazate as our road continues through the Dades Valley "the valley of one thousand kasbahs." Tagdilt brings our day to an end as we overnight in a local village house.night in family house

Day 3:

Today the trekking starts as we head off with our muleteers, initially through a small oasis before passing barley fields and fig trees. As we start ascending the volcanic flanks of the Saghro we'll see nomadic shepherd camps before we head over the Tizi Ouzarzam (2300m). From the pass we'll descend to a small oasis where we prepare for our first experience under canvas. Walk distance approx; 6hrs

Day 4:

Today sees us hike to the highest point on our trek - Mount Kouaouch (2600m). From the top we'll have time to take "summit photos" and experience a stunning panorama ranging from the snow-capped peak of Mount M'Goun in the north to the vast expanse of the Sahara to the south. After descending we'll set up camp near the rocks of Tassigdel (the camel's hump!). Walk distance approx; 6hrs.

Day 5:

Today's trekking covers some of the most spectacular scenery in the Jebel Saghro inhabited by the semi-nomadic Ait Atta Berber. The area offers beautiful towering rock pinnacles and impressive formations including the 60m high monoliths of Bab n'Ali (Ali's Gate). This whole area is reminiscent of the landscape in Monument Valley and a memorable place to camp and explore. Walk distance approx; 6hrs.

Day 6:

Our final day of walking heads through a number of villages as we pass farms growing an abundance of crops including wheat, clover and chilies. The hiking continues along streams which are in sharp contrast to the brown/red colures of the surrounding hills and we'll set up our final camp in this stunning landscape where we'll really appreciate its natural beauty. Walk distance approx; 6hrs.

Day 7:

We depart the Jebel Saghro on wild roads through snow-capped Atlas peaks passing areas used for the filming of Lawrence of Arabia! Arriving in Marrakech for a late afternoon check-in we'll have time to experience the colourful Djemaa-el-Fna which comes alive as darkness falls. Later we'll meet for an evening of Moroccan hospitality and cuisine to round off our Jebel Saghro experience!
